tragedy of the present
When they are first reunited with each other after centuries of being seperated and vengeful feelings mounting, Ceres and Shiso do not get along very well. In fact, they try to kill each other every chance they could by using the celestial powers they were reincarnated with. It seems as though the unspoken emotions and regrets have reached an all time high and neither remembered the truth of their own past anymore.
Ceres claimed that Shiso stole her robe and forced her into a loveless marriage with him, raped her and made her become the mother of his children. That she only killed him because she needed an opening to get away. Shiso really doesn't claim anything other than the fact that Ceres will not be leaving him, her husband, nor have any contact at all with males. He confesses to know where to the celestial robe is hidden, but refuses to give up the location of the robe to Ceres. He is determined to continue their wife and husband relationship. Though it seems he is kind of ticked that she killed him.
Shiso also takes over the entire idenity of Aki Mikage and pushes the boy's presence back into the depths of his mind. Ceres, however, although taking control of Aya during critical times and times when she is face to face with Shiso, lets Aya keep her own idenity. I think that Shiso is also aware of the fact that the Mikage family is only using him to make themselves more powerful, but chooses to ignore it as long as Ceres finally returns to him in the end.
Throughout the story, and during each ongoing confrontation between the married couple, Ceres continues to claim that she was forced into a loveless marriage until Shiso had enough and finally blurts out the truth; and that she married him out of her own accord.
As an act of revenge against his revelation and shattering her deulsional story, Ceres admits to all that she did, in fact, marry Shiso by her own decision. However, it wasn't because she loved him but rather because she was sent to earth to find a suitable male to use to help reproduce. Her mission as a celestial being was to find the best male around and have children with him. In fact, she tops her story off with revealing that she, as Aya, is pregnant with Tooya's child.
Shiso becomes engraged to learn that he was used by his wife, and that she had pretended to love him to suit her own purposes of reproduction, but is still determined to not let what was once his to get away. Meanwhile, the Mikage family, through dna manipulation and science, produced another hagoromo (celestial robe) which Shiso decides to take so he can overpower his wife and kill Tooya and Aya's child.
Tooya, who we find out was actually created by the hagoromo in order to return itself to Ceres, bestows upon Ceres her original feathered robe. During the last confrontation between Shiso and Ceres, they are both wearing their hagaoromo.
However, it seems that the one that Shiso is wearing is flawed and its effect of cellular destruction on a normal human body is completely irreversable. Aki returns to himself and restrains Shiso so Ceres can finish off her husbands enraged spirit and free him from the power that she gave to him. Of course, because of the hagaoromo, Aki's body is completely destroyed by this process and he dies.
After releasing her husband, Ceres leaves Aya's body to return to
his side. The two, as spirits, can finally talk since Shiso has
been saved from the celestial beings' power and is back to his normal meek self. They both recomfirm
their love for each other and finally decide to rest in peace and not reincarnate themselves in their
descendents anymore for the sake of revenge. They both then disappear together.
